Taking a Turn

July 29th, 2009

It looks like Marcel’s quest to stop smoking by taking Zyban isn’t going to happen. This morning he woke up with heart palpitations and a shaky feeling. He’s been taking the medication a week, and today was the day that he was suppose to start taking two pills with Saturday being the day that he was suppose to stop ‘cold turkey’ with smoking.

I was at the beach, namely Aloha with Desere when Marcel called me to tell me about his symptoms. I didn’t really think it was the pills, since he’s been taking them for a while and hasn’t had any side effects, but he called the doc just to be on the safe side.

Our doc is on vacation, but the attending doc said that he should stop the pills. When he asked about another type, the assistant said they are pretty much all the same, so it doesn’t look like medication to stop will be in his future.

He did make an appoinment to get information about a stop-smoking clinic, which should actually be covered by our insurance, or at least a portion of- these pills were not. The clinic will also cover other methods, and right now he’s leaning towards either acupuncture or laser acupuncture- we’ve both heard good things about both.

I say if it helps, I’m all for it- I just hate to see him continue down this path, since it’s obvious that smoking isn’t making him any healthier, and I’d prefer to see him quit BEFORE he starts having smoking related health issues. Ultimately, it’s his decision, but we’ll see what happens.

I’ll keep y’all posted.
