Home Sweet Home

November 29th, 2010

I actually took this picture the Friday after we arrived home- and pretty close to 5.  It was supposed to be my 5 O’ Clock Friday’s picture that week, and I never ended up getting it uploaded to the computer.   This is the unedited picture- as I don’t have any type of editing software added to mom’s laptop yet, so what you see is what you get.

Do you know what it is?

It’s actually one of the few remaining persimmons on diddy’s tree.   Brooklynn (Sheila’s 18 month old daughter) was highly fascinated with them, so we decided to give her one to try. (Not the one pictured- as it wasn’t ripe.)   She loved it as much as the rest of us do and if you’ve never had a persimmon, you’re missing out.

That evening we went to dinner as a family for catfish.   You know you’re in the south when most of your meal could be fried and/ or calorie-laden.    Fried catfish filets with all the fixin’s   (Fixin’s include-  fried dill pickles with ranch dressing, fried hush puppies in cheese sauce, french fries and lets not forget the cole slaw).    It’s a heart attack waiting to happen.    I skipped the cole slaw and had salad, plus had a baked potato instead of french fries.   I only had a few hush puppies and two small pieces of fish.   It was a good treat.

No trip home would be complete without at least two visits to the local catfish restaurant.  Home- there’s nothing quite like it.

I LOVE persimmons! I don’t have a tree and I don’t know anyone with one so I hadn’t had any until I came to New York. I bought two here at the grocery down the street, paid a ridiculous amount of money for them but they were so worth it. When I worked at a branch library we would have library patrons bring them to us. That’s how I found out that I love persimmons.
