Greener Pastures

May 23rd, 2013

greenerI came across this today and I couldn’t help but smile.   Granted- the obvious is true here.  The grass IS greener where I water it- (or you- or anyone, for that matter) but I did not take it in the literal sense.  I found myself thinking beyond the literal- and more into the abstract.

Think about it-   How many times have you heard the old phrase “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” ?  I’ve heard it countless amount of times throughout my life and even to this day- I can see where people (myself included in the past) would fall into the trappings of thinking that when things look so glorious somewhere else-   that they would like a piece of it, so they go after it, or spend copious amounts of time wishing that they had that ‘life, relationship, insert whatever you think of here’ to make their life ‘better’.

I’m definitely not one to say that we shouldn’t strive for excellence and doing the best at being the best version of ourselves that we are… and of course in order to do that- there should be a pattern of growth.   It does mean that I’m a firm believer that just because  the packaging and appearance looks good, doesn’t necessarily mean it is- or that it’s where YOU need to be.

Sometimes-  we tend to put so much focus on the ‘greener pastures’ that we begin to find fault in the very space we are planted and rather than tend the space where we are-   we allow it to shrivel and die- because the greener pasture is where all the ‘good stuff’ awaits.     Sure- there can be ‘good stuff’ around the corner or even over the fence, but if you aren’t happy where you are planted- what makes you think you will be happy on the other side of the fence or in a ‘greener’ pasture?

Plus-  often times if we take the time to water our own grass- tend to and nurture it, then we’ll find that our own grass is greener than anywhere else.    It’s all about where your focus is.

Remember- the grass is also sometimes greener over the septic tank- but we all know what’s gurgling under there.
