“Do U Txt n Drv?

May 19th, 2009

Don’t you just love that title? For those of you who are wondering if I’ve lost my mind, or have no idea what the title says, I’ll put it out here in proper English and not ‘Text Speak’ which you can see above.

The title asks the question: Do you text and drive?

I think we’ve all been guilty of driving and chatting on the phone at the same time, but one thing I can honestly say that I’ve never done is text and drive. I don’t see the point, and come on, are you really going to tell me that the text that you are receiving while you’re driving can’t wait until you reach your destination?

*Gasp* What on earth did we do before text/sms messages, or cell phones? We managed, that’s what we did. Regardless of what any of us may think- none of us are THAT important, that sending a message to persons unknown is worth risking not only your own life, but the life of an innocent bystander.

I know people who do it- and I’m sure you do too- Heck, you may even do it yourself, but I have one word for those who do S-T-U-P-I-D.

Forrest Gump’s mama once said, “Stupid is as stupid does”, and texting while driving is pure stupidity.

I was listening to a show that talked about smoking pot impairs your ability to react 35% while driving, and what do you think it is while texting? Surely it can’t be more than smoking pot- Guess again- Texting while driving impairs your ability to react 91%. 91%!!! That’s insane. Even if you think you’ve got everything under control- you never know what could happen at the spur of the moment, and you wouldn’t have time to react, because your thoughts are elsewhere.

I’ve heard the argument- “I’m a good multi-tasker”. I have to say to that, I consider myself also a really great multi-tasker, but the bottom line is this, it isn’t about having the ability to do several different things at once- a monkey can do that- the question is, your mind is concentrating on texting and not on your driving and any situations that may arise.

I know there are people who may read this and roll their eyes thinking, “Here she goes on one of her tangents”, and that may be true, but what is SO important that it can’t wait until you stop the car to respond? Nothing!

And just think- it may save your life, or the life of another.

Think about it the next time you receive a text while driving and are tempted to pick it up, read the message and respond. That split second choice could cost someone, including you, their life.

Soooo- “Dnt txt n drv!!!” (Don’t Text and Drive!!)

I’d love to hear what YOU think about this subject!

I was driving home from the mall yesterday and there was a pick up truck coming toward me. All of a sudden, the guy strayed into my lane. I ended up with the right tires on the grass. I was terrified!

While I am actually on board for banning cell phone use while driving, or use only with a handsfree devise, I hate to admit it, but guilty as charged.

It’s even worse now that I have a qwerty keyboard. It was easy before because I knew the keys so well I could send a text with one hand and rarely have to look at the screen. Now I use both hands. Yikes! I should stop, I know. I’m not proud of myself.

  10. LERMONTOV says:

All the time! Bad habit – must stop. I also read the paper and drive – worse habit!
