A Few Minutes

April 21st, 2011

I have exactly 7 minutes before it’s time to head to the hospital, so I thought I’d tap out a few words while I enjoy my cup of  java with a little Peppermint Mocha Coffee Mate for a little indulgent and yet relaxing feel.   I don’t generally drink coffee once the weather starts warming, but there is something about a little Peppermint Mocha that will soothe the soul- and I definitely needed a little of that.

JJ had his ‘hair’ appointment today- which didn’t exactly go as it should have.  Cairn Terriers are supposed to be plucked when they are groomed and not trimmed or shaved.   Their top layer of fur becomes ‘ripe’  and then it should be able to be plucked out by hand with little to no effort- (Although it won’t fall out on its own), but to no pain to the pup.

Well, every single time we’ve had JJ plucked (which has only been about 4 times), he’s not been 100% ripe all over his entire body.  He should be, but he falls in this category that doesn’t get ripe at the same time, so everytime there is little issue with getting him plucked and not causing him pain.   Last time (in early November) he was not ripe at all- (in spite of ‘looking’ like he was)  so he was partially plucked and partially clipped.  It wasn’t too bad.

This time was different..  even though he appeared ready- when the breeder tried to pluck him; it was evident that he was uncomfortable..  His skin turned red, and there was little blood marks.   Needless to say-  the breeder didn’t want to hurt him and I didn’t want her to.     It left us with a couple of options- to come back in about two months, but she felt the same that I did- that there were still going to be problems.   She said this happens sometime- so she said the only other option besides hurting him was to shave him-    Not bald, mind you, but until his under coat.  That would mean though- that he could never be plucked again, because shaving changes their fur to a finer fur as opposed to the coarse fur that he has.       I hated to do it- because it’s not how it’s supposed to be done, but at least I knew it wouldn’t hurt him.   He looks the same but I’m curious as to how he’s going to look when it grows out.

I’ll share a before and after picture a little later-  Right now.. Hospital time..

Hope it all goes well at the hospital. I well know that daily trek. Poor JJ. Nothing is ever easy is it?
