One Week Later

It has been a little more than a week since I started round three of Whole 30 and while it’s going great, I’m having ‘moments’.    There have been a few things going on that have me feeling quite emotional, which in terms means I need to be more conscious-   doing Whole 30 means I can’t emotional eat-   which is a great thing, but also sometimes difficult when I want to have a piece of chocolate.     But it’s a positive-   it’s a lesson in being aware.   A lesson that I need, since it’s one I’ve had to learn time and time again.

There have been times this past week when I wanted to throw in the towel and say ‘forget it’, but I know that I am only defeating myself by giving up.   So I continue to move forward, as I know that anything that I’m facing in my life is temporary and the importance of going through the process, keeping my eyes open and learning along the way is the gift in all this.    Plus I’m committed.   Being committed to something doesn’t mean it’s always easy, but instead means that you are ‘all in’ no matter what.

This omelette is one of the breakfasts I’ve had this past week.  Always delicious and filling-  Plus the bonus of being healthy.   Can’t go wrong there, can you?

Round 3 – Whole 30

Happy March y’all!   I’m loving the sunshine we are seeing today & I’m feeling energized from all the Vitamin D I’ve been soaking up.    The days are getting longer qua daylight hours and I can practically smell Spring in the air.   It also seemed like a great time to kick off another Whole 30.    This will be my third one-  my first about a year ago which changed my life and how I felt so much, the second in August and now, this one.

I have heard quite a few people say that Whole 30 is hard.    No, honestly- it isn’t hard at all.   It takes thought, effort & in order to be 100% successful on the Whole 30 plan, you MUST be prepared.

I decided last week that it was time to do another Whole 30, so I started making mental notes (and some paper), of the things I knew I needed to do to set myself up for another Whole 30 success.

One of my favorite stores had boneless-skinless turkey breast on sale for an amazing price, so I called to see if they would grind some for me, but it wasn’t something that they do.  No problem- I did a little Googling and found a method to grind my own using the food processor.  Earlier this morning I spent some time doing exactly that.

I made some almond butter-   nothing but roasted almonds and salt.   That’s it.     Forget the fact that I burned the first batch because I got busy with something and remembered when I smelled the scent of burnt almonds (it’s not a good smell y’all).   The second  batch was a success.  I know exactly what’s in it, which is important.

I purchased and stuck in the freezer some packages of my favorite Whole 30 compliant bacon.   Plus, I found sweet potatoes on sale for a great price & decided to buy an entire box.   Kept cool, they keep for ages, so why not?

I also picked up some avocados, something I pretty much keep on hand all the time anyway, but this ensures I don’t run out.

Those are the ‘main’ things I’ve done thus far to ensure that I can manage without little stress and rock the next month.

Two More Days

I am happy to report that I have ‘almost’ made it through another Whole 30.    I will be the first to admit that this time around has been MUCH more difficult for me than the first time.    The reason why, I believe is because my husband joined in and it made meal prep extremely challenging and time consuming.   I’m very easy-  I can keep things simple for myself and keep rolling along, but he isn’t quite that flexible.   He decided mid Whole 30 that he no longer wanted eggs or anything to do with them.    Oyyy-   That somewhat limited breakfast, but he did finally agree to breakfast with eggs- and his lunches have become daily salads- which I’ve added a variation to.       I would spend time each week cutting and shredding veggies, then all I’d have to do is add the base of mixed greens and various toppings- and a drizzle of good olive oil.   He was happy and so was I.

It has been a good experience though and he swears nothing has changed for him.  I find that hard to believe, but I have to take him at his word.  Those guys-  you gotta love em. :)

In Full Whole 30 Swing

We are on day 18 or 19 of Whole 30.  It’s round 2 for me0  round one for my guy.    This time has been more of a challenge for me, as I spend a lot more time in the kitchen making breakfasts and lunches for my husband- since he’s so used to having a sandwich of some sort every day.  Whole 30 breakfast On the days he works early in the morning- I’m left to my own vices for breakfast-   which today was a vice of mashed sweet potatoes, bacon, avocado mash, and scrambled eggs.   I added a little pepper to add a kick, oh and a few pumpkin seeds.    It was delicious & simple.   Two things I can really get behind when I’m doing Whole 30, or anytime, really.

Dinner tonight was another simple fare-  chicken breast that had been seasoned and grilled,  roasted eggplant and zucchini-  alongside a few browned potato slices.     I kept the potatoes at a low-  but again, an easy meal.

Whole 30 Results

Life has kept me on the go as of late, which meant I didn’t finish updating on my Whole 30 progress, plus the results.

I didn’t weigh myself before or after- but I can tell I lost weight. On the whole, it has changed the way I feel about food on so many levels. I’ve been done more than a week, and truth is my energy is higher than it has been in YEARS! Truth is, I don’t know when the last time was that I had so much continuous energy, and sometimes so much so that I would have to really watch myself in the evenings or I’d be buzzing along and unable to sleep at all.

Yesterday, after a busy day we decided to order out- simple meal- hamburgers and french fries. The flavor wasn’t bad, but within 45 minutes, I felt horrible! Sleepy, sluggish etc. It lasted throughout the evening and that reminded me of how I felt ALL the time pre Whole 30. Most of the time I felt worse, but it was yet another reminder of how I do NOT want to live.

My husband also wants to do the Whole 30, as he has RA, so we’ll do that after our vacation. I’ll do it with him, as I’m somewhat living Whole 30ish right now anyway. When I go for the less ‘real’ foods, my body reminds me of why I don’t want to poison myself with sub-standard foods.

I was at the point before Whole 30 that I felt something was terribly wrong with me, and while I did believe the food would make a little difference, I never realized just how much. Life changing- seriously! … this coming from someone who eats whole foods 85% of the time anyway, but not to the degree of Whole 30.

Was it restrictive? Yes- Was it hard? NO! Not for me at all. I did not struggle unless I didn’t plan properly and then I wanted to eat more, but on the whole- I didn’t have the cravings and I still don’t.

I’ve added all things back without any big reactions to them, but I will continue to keep grains, dairy and sugars to a minimum, but will eat beans and legumes when the urge strikes me.

This is very much doable and it will make a huge difference in how you feel, plus how you look at food.

Whole 30- Days 23-27

April 10th, 2016

I can’t believe it has been five days since I last posted.  I realized it had been a few, but admittedly I’ve been running in so many different directions that I have lost track along the way.

This week also has a big buzz of busy- but I was able to get SO much accomplished last week, that once this week is done, the last couple of weeks before our trip should be a breeze.

I am still rocking the Whole 30 and feeling better than ever.   My sleep continues to not be as good as usual, but I believe that’s part time-change and also partly me having so much energy- or as they call it in Whole 30 world-  “Tiger Blood”.  I definitely have it.

IMG_1720Today, despite having a day off from everything- I didn’t really do a lot in preparation for food, and it showed in how I’ve eaten today-   I ate a lot of bacon, and grabbed a lot of nuts here and there throughout the day.  I had been so busy during the week that I decided to forego playing in the sunshine, and instead spent quite a few hours cleaning and getting things ready for the new week.  Since Marcel was having dinner at his moms-  I wasn’t focused on myself- (and that wasn’t smart) so I skipped breakfast and lunch (insert bacon and nuts here).    Dinner, I made a soup of roasted butternut squash, fresh ginger, coconut milk, carrots, a little mango, peppers and of course, bacon!   It sounds a little odd- but trust me when I say it was amazing.

The plus is- I have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow, and that will mean a quick and easy lunch for me-    I’ll probably add some spinach to it to bump the nutrient factor.

Tuesday we’re going to be gone all day-  I have a cheesecake delivery several hours from here-  but I am prepared.     The rest of the week is looking good, and as it looks- I’ll be done on Thursday- as I decided to do 31 days.   I already know that I’ll continue to follow the Whole 30 plan pretty closely until we head to our vacation, with the exception of having an event on Saturday, and maybe a few other little things here and there.  I like the way I feel, so why mess with that?   I don’t believe I will.

 

 

 

Whole 30- Day 22

April 5th, 2016

What a difference a day makes.  As I mentioned yesterday, I was really in a ‘mood’ yesterday.   I had a great nights sleep, despite waking up several times.   I did wake up with a slight headache this morning, but one cup of coffee later and it was gone.    I made an intentional slow start to the day today even though my to do list was long.  I knew it would also mean me finishing work much later than I would prefer, but I thought it was the wiser choice since I was feeling so blah yesterday, plus had the headache.

It paid off-   I’ve had an abundance of energy today and I feel great!    I was able to get everything checked off my to do list and then some, plus here I sit with a little time to spare before Marcel gets home from work.

IMG_1551I will admit that I probably didn’t eat enough today, but I feel great-  For brunch, I made this odd concoction that was a take on the blueberry fritatta that I made last week.    So it was eggs, lemon zest, blueberries, a little pumpkin seeds, a drizzle of almond butter, coconut- oh and let’s not forget the compliant bacon.     It is a weird sounding combination- but it really worked well.  It was delicious!

 

Dinner tonight ended up being chicken breast, sauteed zucchini with lemon zest and Greek seasonings, a half avocado, and half a sweet potato.   It was filling and I am not feeling the desire to eat anything at all.

Tomorrow is another busy work day- and hard to believe that I have 9 days left until I’m done.

I’m looking forward to seeing how I feel at the end and moving forward.  One thing I know for sure already- is that I’ll be taking with me what I’ve learned and applying it to life post Whole 30.

 

Whole 30- Day 20 & 21

April 4th, 2016

As I was downloading the photos from my iPhone to upload to here- I realized that there are only so many ways that you can share photos of omelettes, so I decided to forego posting photos until I make something a little different.

I’ve continued to have either an omelette or the sweet potato/ scrambled egg/ almond butter combo the last two days.     Dinner has been chicken, and also salad of mixed greens.

Please know that by no means am I saying that Whole 30 is boring.  It isn’t.  I have personally just been super busy and not having a lot of time to cook, so prepping for me means automating my meals somewhat.

The last couple of days I haven’t been sleeping well at night,   I’ve been waking often, which I attribute to the time change.    I still have found myself with a lot of energy, although today I seem to be feeling irritated at small things.    Granted, this probably has nothing to do with Whole 30, but more a hormonal thing happening, or even the inability to quiet the brain space with so many things going on at once.   I’m sure it’s nothing a good night’s sleep and some time alone won’t cure.

Tomorrow is a new day, and I’m feeling the crunch of getting some things done, but at the same time- I know that if I can get most of my work stuff done this week, that will make the rest of the month MUCH easier for me.

All in all- life is amazing, and I am blessed and grateful for this journey.  It’s hard for me to believe it has been a full three weeks.

Whole 30- Day’s 18 and 19

Yesterday I had good intentions of spending time on the computer catching up across the blogosphere, plus adding a few posts of my own, but work called.  That meant that I needed to take care of that first, and once I finished getting everything checked off the ‘immediate’ to-do list, I was ready for some time to unwind.     I managed to take a photo of breakfast, but I didn’t get one at dinner.

IMG_1460Most of you may be noticing that my breakfasts don’t veer too far off the path.  It isn’t because I can’t or don’t like to be creative with foods, but more because it’s easier for me to not have to think about what I want to eat- but rather have it all planned out the day before.

Yesterday I had baked sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs, a little compliant bacon (read the labels), homemade almond butter and coconut.    I know- it sounds like a really odd flavor combination, but the reality is, it works really really well.

I love it!

Since I ate this closer to lunch time- it was more a brunch than anything, so I had a mandarin in the afternoon.

Dinner was a chicken breast wrapped in bacon, green beans and sauteed zucchini with a 1/4 avocado.     I had a small banana and also a mandarin.  IMG_1459

This morning was not much different breakfast wise than yesterday.    In fact, the only difference is I didn’t add bacon, but I did add pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, and a few pine nuts.     With a huge cup of coffee with Almond milk (check labels) it hit the spot, plus gave me the energy to buzz through the afternoon.

Since sugar is my business- and I had work to do- I spent all afternoon making my Fleur de Sel caramels, and then I decided to test a recipe I’ve been thinking about for while.    I wasn’t sure how I’d feel- since I usually taste everything before I let it pass across someone elses lips- but that wasn’t the case this time.    The cookies were a hit and received great reviews, which makes me very happy to know.       The great thing for me was, that I wasn’t tempted.   I didn’t want to eat the remaining caramel in the pot, nor did I feel tempted to try a cookie.   At the same time I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.

Am I saying that I plan to never eat a cookie again?  No!  I would be lying to both of us if I said that.   It does mean that I was able to do my chosen profession without a feeling that I was going to end up in the Whole 30 ditch because I’d indulged in sugar- grains – peanut butter- milk.

I celebrate victories like these!

In other news, I continue to have a lot of energy.  It doesn’t mean I don’t ever get tired, but for the most part my tiredness doesn’t hit until the evening, when it actually should.   Yay for that!    I’m going to start kicking up some exercising and see how I feel doing that.  It has been a while, and it’s time to make that switch too.

IMG_1461I’m a firm believer in not trying to focus on too many new goals at once, because it tends to keep us from being fully committed to any of them.  That isn’t what I want, but now that I think I can safely say I’m in a good Whole 30 groove, I would like to add more exercise- start building some well-needed muscle, plus get the heart pumping a little harder.

Dinner tonight is to your left-    A green salad with a little bacon, greens, tomatoes, olives, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Chicken breast- green beans, mushrooms and zucchini.   I had a mandarin when I finished.   I felt really hungry at dinner, which is why I ate as much as I did-  I didn’t feel overly stuffed though, but comfortably full.

It’s hard for me to believe that I am almost at day 20.    I’ll go through 31 days- so I supposed this is going to be a Whole 31.

I’ve learned so much- and feel really good.  My face break outs are less and less, plus the horrible break out I had is now almost fully cleared.   I believe as long as I drink enough water, it will remain so, at least I hope so.

Whole 30 – Day 17

March 31st, 2016

I can’t believe that it’s almost FRIDAY!!   YAY!    Forget the fact that I’ll need to actually get some work done this weekend, but rest assured there is going to be some fun (and I believe sunshine) tossed in there somewhere.   After all,    All work and no play.. well that’s not me!

I can’t believe that day 17 came and went with the blink of an eye.   I had a busy day-   but a good day.

Last night I was hungry-   really hungry- so I realized that it was probably due to not eating enough protein yesterday, so I set out to make sure that today was much different.

IMG_1336This morning, I had a late breakfast, so I made myself an 3 egg omelette with compliant bacon (check labels), a little arugula, tomato, mushrooms and chives.  I added some spices and had some avocado on the side.

It kept me full most of the day- so much so that when dinner rolled around, I wasn’t hungry, but knew I needed to eat-   so I had a chicken breast wrapped in bacon, half an avocado a few olives, and then a small (3-4 inch) banana and two fresh clementines.

It amazes me at how much not having enough of what I need makes a difference in how I feel.   Tonight- I feel comfortably full and not wanting to go invade the walnut jar.

While out today- I picked up some chicken breasts that were on sale.  Rather than putting them in the freezer like usual, I immediately added spices to them and put them in a baking dish.   I’ll toss some in the freezer, plus keep some in the fridge- making for a quick and easy addition to a salad or a lettuce wrap.

The journey continues and I continue to have an abundance of energy and feel great.   This afternoon I did have a little moment of feeling tired, but I think that was more because I was running around attempting to do five things at once more than anything else.
