Weird Weather

August 24th, 2010

I think we are having some of the weirdest weather I’ve ever seen.   In addition to having minimal hurricane force winds for the past couple of days- one minute the sun is shining and the next it is literally pouring with hail falling everywhere.

Marcel, JJ and I took advantage of the lull in the storm so that we could let JJ do his ‘doggie bizness’ and also let him run and get out some of his excess energy.   Trust me, you can tell by his behavior when this doesn’t happen.   We got finished playing and I decided that we had to take the long way home (much to Marcel’s protests), even though I knew the bottom would probably fall out of the sky.   It did.  Marcel and JJ decided to stop and take shelter under a willow tree, along with a lady and her golden lab.   I stayed with them until the lightening started- then I told them they were on their own.   Needless to say, Marcel and JJ followed as I jetted out of there.

I actually thought it was funny and even as I type this, I’m soaking wet.   I’m headed to the bath though to warm up.   Between the wind and rain, I’m freezing.   Twenty minutes later-  the sun is shining.    I’m sure it won’t last for long if the rest of the day is any indication of what’s to come.   All you have to do is blink and you’ll see a weather change.

The silver lining is that at least I got a little running in- and JJ was right beside me the entire way.

Sanity Saver (I Hope)

June 12th, 2010

In an effort to save my sanity, and keep me from strangling a certain whiney doggie named JJ, and a cat who likes to instigate more whining from said doggie, we are going to take advantage of the semi-decent weather and take him to the beach.    I’m off to pack his ball, a bottle of water and a towel so we can head off in a few minutes.    I plan to stay out there until he’s so worn out he can’t whine any longer.

I know being at the beach will do me good, plus it may just save my sanity- at least I hope.

I have plenty of 5 O’ Clock Friday submissions thanks to my friend Ruth and my mom, so I’ll be back to share those later.

Busy Little Bee

May 12th, 2010

On those days when I wake up and seem to be going through the motions in a fog, I find that sometimes the only thing that will help is a fresh cup (or two) of coffee.   There are days when I can make it through on one or two cups for an entire day, but others when one or two cups barely get me started.

Today is one of those days.  I’ve had three cups so far, and my ‘to do’ list keeps growing, but I’m not complaining.   I’m happy that I’m able to do the things that I need to do, even though I wouldn’t mind taking a little nap on this rainy day.

I have a friend visiting tomorrow at 11, so I need to get everything done in the house before she arrives tomorrow morning.  Marcel will be snoozing in the morning, since he has to work all night, so vacuuming won’t be an option, plus I need to get some work done in the morning before she arrives, so that will keep me busy.

In addition, I have a birthday to attend this afternoon-   Desere’s oldest son turns 15 today (Happy Birthday Tom!), plus we found out that our weekend away is going to happen so I’ve been trying to put a few things together that I’ll need in the kitchen.   I don’t want to have to go to the grocery store while we are away and dinner is going to be something easy, (like chicken soup)  since I’m definitely not going away for the weekend to spend hours in the kitchen.    Now I just hope that this nasty weather will clear and that we’ll actually have some blue skies and sunshine.   Warmer temps wouldn’t be bad either, but I’ll settle for blue skies and sunshine.

Since I forgot to mention that I have a few flowers to plant today, I’d better get out of here and get that done.   I found some red basil yesterday and some rosemary, so I decided to add them to my little herb garden.   I also found two carnation plants, which I bought in remberance of Carol-  they were her favorites.   I stood in the store and cried, but more on that later.  Right now, I really should dash and maybe brew myself another cup or two of coffee.

Too Cold For the Beach?

May 6th, 2010

After my little adventure of tiptoeing through the tulips yesterday, I woke up this morning with some serious allergy issues- runny nose, itchy eyes. I couldn’t remember yesterday morning if I’d taken my allergy medication, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t, so I think that only compounded the issue. I’d do it again today though- there is nothing like laying in the middle of a sea of tulips and being surrounded by all that color. It is unbelieveable!

Thoughts of today’s adventures have me wondering if it’s too cold outside to take JJ to the beach. He’s only been once, but he adores water. In fact, he spends probably an hour a day ‘fishing’ in his water bowl. It’s a ceramic water bowl with fish in the bottom and he sticks his nose in it and tries to catch them. His latest, is that last night he started blowing bubbles in the water through his nose and he seems equally amused by that. Marcel found it slightly annoying and I found it to be hilarious, especially since I’ve been known to do the same thing.

I think we’ll first head to the supermarket and pick up some strawberries that are on sale for a ridulously low price. Plus, I was just reminded that Marcel needed to help one of our neighbors in about an hour (which he’d forgotten all about), so after that we’ll head to the shores. I’m hoping it will give me the opportunity to also do a little running on the beach, since my original plan was to run in the neighborhood. I like running on the beach even better, and afterwards- a cup of coffee at Aloha.

Sounds like the makings of the perfect day.

Fly By Weekends and Brilliant Puppies

April 25th, 2010

The weekend has flown by and I’m still trying to figure out exactly where it went, but one thing for sure- is that it’s been a great one. I slept in for two days in a row (Thanks JJ), plus I’ve got my exercise groove on, and spent time with wonderful friends.

In addition- I’ve also found that I have the most brilliant pup on the face of the earth. Today, I told Marcel that I was going to see if he’d jump over this small guard railing and Marcel didn’t think he’d do it. Since I’ve trained him recently to jump on the park benches at the command of “Up Up” (Up alone means stand on your hind legs and dance- one that we’re still mastering, but he’s got it almost perfect), I was certain that he’d hop right over that little railing, at least with a little prompting. Marcel was not convinced- said he didn’t think he’d do it, and about that time I snapped my fingers on the other side of the railing, said “Up Up” and without hesitating he flew over the railing.

I screamed with joy- (Yes, it’s the little things) and just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke I said it again and voila’ he did it again! Next time, I’m going to make a little video, because it’s just too cute not to.

A great week is on the horizon and I’m looking forward to all it has to offer.

5 O’ Clock Friday’s

April 23rd, 2010

It’s that time again- Week number 3 of 5 O’ Clock Friday’s is upon us. I don’t think there are but a few of us participating at this point, but maybe I need to work on getting the word out. After all, it’s fun to see what people come up with.

This week, I must admit that when 5 O’ Clock rolled around, I was stretched out in the hammock in the sunshine probably snoring. I fell asleep while reading Women, Food and God (no it isn’t boring, but with the sound of the fountain in the background and the sun kissing my skin- I drifted), I didn’t wake up until 5:20 when Tom (my uncle), called me from TN. We chatted for a few, and then I realized I was running late with dinner, so I rushed around and got that done.

Immediately after that we rushed out the door to head to the hospital to see Desere (she’s doing great and will probably go home in the morning), so needless to say- I forgot about 5 O’ Clock Friday’s til just a little while ago. So, I’ll admit it- today I’m cheating and using a photo that I took at 2 O’ Clock. It’s three hours earlier, but you won’t tell- will you?

Dont’ forget to submit YOUR photos to 5 O’ Clock Friday’s via emailing lori in care of this website address, or link them to your blog (providing your a blogger) and let me know so I can link you from here.

JJ and Pals

April 19th, 2010

I just got back from a walk/play session with JJ and he is now officially tuckered out. At least until he hears me pulling the vacuum cleaner out, and he’ll go ballistic. I’m not sure what it is about the vacuum, but it drives him batty.

After we’d finished our little walk, I found a stick that didn’t look like he could eat it in one gulp and we started playing. He still hasn’t learned what the meaning of ‘let go’ means (actually probably knows exactly what it means, but he prefers to protest because he doesn’t WANT to let the stick go) so I have to wrestle the stick out of his mouth while telling him 100 times to let it go. IF he does let it go, he’ll look at me and the second I try to get it, he’ll throw his paws over the top of it and put his head down low so it makes it difficult to retrieve. It reminds me so much of the dog we had named Cocoa when I was growing up.

JJ has two little friends who are Welsh Corgie puppies. Their names are Luna and Onyx. They are absolutely adorable and belong to the same owner and they love to play together. I should have taken the ‘eye’ with me today, because seeing JJ, Luna and Onyx together is hilarious. I had no idea that we’d run into them or I would have. They immediately wanted to play with JJ’s stick but he wanted no part of that. He growled at them, so I took the stick and he ignored them, jumping like a kangaroo because he wanted his stick and I was holding it.

Eventually I gave him back the stick and he ran around prancing and acting as though he owned the world. Then he noticed that Luna and Onyx had a stick so he decided he wanted HIS stick AND THEIRS, so he bullied them (or tried to, until I came to the rescue). I tried teaching him it’s nice to share, but when he happened to let the stick fall out of his mouth and one of them grabbed it, he wasn’t amused. I found it hilarious, but the owner did make them give it back.

Who says that animals aren’t like kids?

Introducing- 5 O’ Clock Friday’s

April 9th, 2010

Today is the first edition of what I hope to be many 5 O’ Clock Friday’s. The idea is to take a picture of whatever grabs your attention at 5 O’ Clock and then either send it this way so I can share it with the masses, or let me know where to find it so I can link what you’ve come up with.

Since my own 5 O’ Clock has come and gone, this is what I was able to photograph in my surroundings at 5. One of my favorite guys protecting his World Cup soccer ball. Surprisingly he has a few moves like a soccer player. We bought him the ball when we were out and about yesterday and he adores it. So much so, that he won’t be caught sharing with the likes of the adorable Mister M.

Now that I’ve shown you mine; it’s your turn to show me yours.

Email me at lori at this domain (simplywizardress.com) with your picture, link etc. You’ll receive full credit for your photo and it’s open to ANYONE not just bloggers. So find some inspiration in your surroundings and I can’t wait to see what y’all come up with.

So Long Soup Saturday

March 27th, 2010

Now that Spring is officially here- it’s time that I retire “Soup Saturdays” until the fall. I guess that means that I need to come up with something else food related for Saturday’s…. hmm what about Salad Saturday, or Smoothie Saturday? I’ll figure out something, but it may be salad Saturday since I love salads of all sorts and they can take us into the spring, summer and the early fall. After all, the combinations are endless.

Marcel is still having a lot of pain, and I have to admit that I’m going a bit stir crazy being home and having to take care of everything. Thankfully Desere came over last night to keep me company, and then she was sweet enough to let me go with her to the grocery store today, where I was able to get out for a while. Between that, my work out and walking with JJ, it has been a busy Saturday in spite of not working.

Tomorrow, I’d love to say that I’m going to sleep late, but since JJ has been up the past couple of days between 7-7:30 I don’t see that happening. I wonder if I slipped some of Marcel’s morphine in his water if he’d sleep late? I’m KIDDING!! I would never do something like that. EVER! So don’t panic and think I’m going to start giving my dog or any other creature in the house drugs.

Marcel is watching the soccer, and I am fading fast. I think it’s going to be an early night tonight.

*Plop*

March 25th, 2010

Since JJ is a terrier and they are born hunters we have to be very careful with letting him go anywhere without a leash. In fact, he doesn’t go anywhere without one, partly because he doesn’t listen well enough to go without one, and also because I have visions of him seeing a bird or someone on a bicycle and deciding that it would be fun to chase them. I know he wouldn’t return until he was ready and no amount of yelling “COOKIE” (the word that usually stops him dead in his tracks and running towards me) would make a difference.

After dinner I thought it would be nice to take JJ on the other side of the canal where he really didn’t have any danger of getting away from me, so I could remove the leash and play ‘balley balley’ with him. I actually couldn’t find his rubber ball, so it ended up being a rubber bone, but we still call it ‘balley balley’. I don’t think he realized that he was ‘free’ to run and do what he wanted because he never ventured far from us. He was happy and content playing and running around and it is the most heartwarming thing ever to see him ‘smile’.

I decided at a certain point to toss the ‘balley balley bone’ in the direction of Marcel and wouldn’t you know it bounced twice (which it hadn’t been doing) and landed with a huge PLOP in the canal. JJ stopped dead in his tracks at the waters edge and gave me this look as if to say, “Now what?” Marcel was with us at my urging, simply because he hasn’t been out of the house in days and I thought it would be good for him.

He commented that the bone was lost, and I assured him that I would retrieve it. I think I caught him rolling his eyes as I walked past him in search of a large stick. I found one in the bushes which happened to have a V at the end of it, and when I got to the waters edge I could see a glimpse of red in the bottom of the brown, murky water. At first I had this bright idea that I would scoop up the bone by balancing it on the V, but I quickly saw that wasn’t happening. Instead, I drug the bone across the bottom of the canal, tossed the stick and laid down on the ground. I pulled up my sleeve, and stuck my hand in the nasty water and retrieved the bone. If JJ could have, I think he would have squealed with glee. Needless to say, I won’t be tossing the bone near the water again, but at least the bone is safe and sound beside JJ inside the crate.
